Thread Name: Lyr Req: I'm Going To Leave Old Dixie
Subject: ADD: I'm Going To Leave Old Dixie
The Blakes' version is more or less identical with the one linked by Sorcha. I transcribed it before seeing her link, so I'll post it for easier access. The Blakes attributed it to 'traditional', but the American Memory gives the actual credits:

I'M GOING TO LEAVE OLD DIXIE
(G.Cooper/C.A.White)

I'm a-going to leave Old Dixie, the times are getting bad
The fields are all deserted, the old man's heart is sad
I'd never quit the old home, but here I'd starve and die
It breaks my heart to leave you, old home goodbye

Chorus:
I'm a-going to leave Old Dixie's land
It breaks my heart to leave this home
But the children gather round me, with hunger they do cry
I'm a-going to leave Old Dixie, old home goodbye

I'm a-going to leave Old Dixie, it's here I'd like to stay
And rest these bones so weary when called from earth away
But all has gone to ruin and I am forced to fly
My tears for you are falling, old home goodbye

Chorus

I'm a-going to leave Old Dixie, but there my heart I leave
With hunger and misfortune, my wife and children grieve
Where I was once so happy, I now can only sigh
I am leaving you forever, old home goodbye

Chorus
