Subject: RE: Lyr Add: JESUS GOIN' MAKE UP MY DYIN' BED I,
I went through the full text of the fieldnotes and copied pages pertinent to spirituals. Most of the notes are incomplete or, in some cases, words are misheard or out of order. From the index I selected spirituals and got 131 items (some are duplicate, some have no notes). From the index I went to the sound recordings and took the versions I post from them, adding from the notes if useful.

It was an interesting exercise. The Lomax team wanted to hear dialect; if you listen to the songs, there may be no dialect (only the sloppy speech most of us exercise) but the notes are written in dialect. That becomes dat, chilly becomes chiller, the becomes de, etc.,etc. Only in some of the prison tunes does what I would call dialect (and in small, inconsistent amounts) appear. I think I somewhat hit between the two extremes.
