I just wanted to let you know about this cool website I found: Oddments of American Music, wherein the author has taken several familiar American songs and traced them back through several versions, sometimes to old sheet music, sometimes to broadsides. Particularly interesting are a 1917 editorial denouncing "Jass" (jazz) as a "musical vice" (Right here in River City!) and scarier directive written by the Nazi Party in 1938.
