In Emily Bronte's novel, "Wuthering Heights," there is a scrap of a ballad which goes,
"It was far in the night, and the bairnies grat,
The mither beneath the mools heard that..."
Anyone out there know of such a ballad? A professor of mine once told me that the scholar Bronson had finally determined this to be an invention of the author, and not a true ballad. I have always felt that it was indeed from a ballad, but have never been able to find it. Anyone else out there?
