Alice, This is a piece our church choir sings, and in the sheet music (which I don't have any more) it says it is a carol from Hungary or some other European nation (not France, Italy, or Germany) -- as I recall, it was Hungarian or maybe Romanian or Czech. Also, someone at a song circle recently said it was Hungarian.

But maybe my memory is wrong. (I was wrong once before.)

Anyway, I thought you Mudcatters could resolve the issue.
