To clear up the confusion of George (and others), the text I remember from the Scottish hymnal was indeed in English, but not the same English words as are commonly sung. The silentnight web site has three alternative English translations, only one of which accords at all with my memory -- I'm not convinced, though, and the site gives no helpful additional info. So I guess I need to find a Scottish hymnal....
