McGrath: I just did a Google search on "thusly" and got "about 53,200" hits.Back in October, 1998, I sent a query to the web site now called The Mavens' Word of the Day about "thusly." It was then called "Jesse's Word of the Day" and was edited by Jesse Sheidlower. Jesse later left Random House to become the North American Principal Editor for the Oxford English Dictionary. And while I'm at it, here's a word that ought to be temporarily banished:
Incredible. It is used as hyperbole so often that people have forgotten its literal meaning, and that it is generally more desirable for things to be credible. When I hear a politician praised as an "incredible orator," or that a certain movie has "incredible special effects," I always smile at the unintended irony.
