Oh, please.
Quebec will never truly separate. Quebecers for the most part (except for a very few distinct hardliners) use separatism as an end to the means of getting what the inuit in the territories recieved. Self rule and preferred favoritism.
Now, before everyone chimes in about self rule is independence, realize its not. They are two different things.
The inuit recieved 'self rule' about 5(?) years ago, and rehashed the Northwest Territory, calling their territory, Nunavut. (which i think it means in inuit,'get off my land whiteboy!) Canada still controls this land. We still have a representative in parliament from Nunavut. We still have clear rights as Canadians to drive into Nunavut without customs, they still use Canadian money, use Canada Post, etc.etc.etc.
Inuit have a little more autonomy than before. But they're still Canadians.
This is what Quebecers want. When Parizeau was in power, he said the same things. "We will still use Canadian money, we will still use the postal service" but we will be our own country. Americans can see somewhat of a similarity if they look at the group of Texas yahoos who want their state to declare independence.
Quebecers have always claimed to be a 'distinct society'. We'll I've got news for ya. I'm from Windsor, Ontario, farthest south In Canada. In my time in the Navy, I sat and watched two guys from backwoods Newfoundland talk to each other. One was from Fogo island, and the other I think was from Conception Bay. They were talking English. I think.
If Quebec can claim a 'distinct society', I believe the Maritimes can, Newfoundland apart from the Maritimes can, the praries can, the west coast can, Southern Ontario can, and the territories can. Last time I checked, thats what a 'Cultural Mosiac' was. Instead of the 'Melting Pot' theory from the States, we support the continuation of your traditional heritage when you live in Canada. Problem is, sometimes a few yahoos take it too far.
