Thread Name: BS: How to be a Hero
Subject: RE: BS: How to be a Hero
I have known two MOH recipients...or at least two that I knew had won the Medal (worked with one, worked for one). My two acquaintences were "just people", with their fair share of good days and bad. Who can say how many other people I knew who did what had to be done and then went on with their lives, some receiving official recognition and some not. One friend (who ended up, I think, being the most decorated soldier in the Vietman War, by some measurement, anyway) told me that he didn't even think of being a hero the day he did the things for which he later received the Medal. To my mind, the people who are most worthy of recognition are those like Mr. Crawford who were able to return to (or go on to) a routine sort of job and leave a lasting impression on others. One of the saddest things to me are the veterans whose lifetime highpoints happened 50-60 years ago (WW2/Korea) or 30 years ago (Vietnam) and have been looking backwards ever since.
