Gift exchanging--and gift buying!--have certainly grown into a big deal, and big business. However, my understanding is that it is based on the Magi bringing gifts to the baby Jesus. It's not just merchants hawking their wares.

While the birth of Christ is of importance to Christians, His resurrection is where the real significance lies. Easter is the holiday with the deeper religious meaning.
