My wife and I got cell phones when we discovered that it would be cheaper than what we were paying to call home or each other from work as much as we were (the Seattle area having some of the smallest free-calling zones in the nation, it would seem -- we both worked less than 30 miles from home, but it was long distance to call home or each other!).

If I am going to a movie or show of some sort, I will either leave it in the car, or set it to vibrate. Since it has a fully functional on-screen menu, it's not like you have to memorize some arcane sequence of buttons to set it to vibrate mode.

But anyway for us the reason to get it was cost. Which is the same reason we're getting DSL: it's cheaper to get DSL than to have 2 phone lines and a dial-up ISP.
