I stopped being a believer (if I ever was one) 40 or so years ago. However, I gladly celebrate Christmas with family and friends as a folk holiday, which it was long before the winter soltice was co-opted by Christian missionaries to the north European pagans and heathens. It sounds as if your friend has taken a great deal of trouble to find gifts that will please you, and is respecting your (dis)belief by coming up with an alternative to giving you a whole pile of stuff Christmas morning.
