Thread Name: Lyr Req: Homeward Once More / Homewards Once More
Subject: Irish song, title unknown
I found this song on a privately made cassette tape of a singing session in Fahan dated May 1992. There is a lot of background noise which made words hard to make out and I could not even make out the singer's name but here is what I was able to transcribe:

He vacantly gazed [far o'er] the blue sea
And he longs for that land that he want's to see free
And as he is thinking the time's drawing neigh
When the good ship will bring him…..to die

Homewards once more, homewards once more
And the good ship has brought me to Erin's green shore
The exile returning, no longer to roam
He will end his career in his native home

…..
And for this he was sentenced……to death
And the sentence was…. carried out, if you please
But instead he was banished….o'er the seas

…….since the crime of his life
He was parted from kindred, from home and from wife
And now as he stands on the far distant shore
Awaiting the steamer….once more

But scene has now changed and the ship on the sea
And the exile on board greets the air pure and free
