I'm inclined to disagree respectfully, Don -- goodness and badness are opinions. The westward expansion of dominant whites was certainly widely felt to be a good thing, since it made life safer for those who were involved in our style of civilization. There was a lot of genuine agreement behind the "good injun = dead injun" sentiment. In WW II the sentiment was similarly posited about people from Germany and Japan. When US forces sank Japanese battlerships in the Pacific, would you say it was a good thing? Probably not for those who strived on behalf of the Rising Sun.

Almost every action can be similarly viewed from different perspectives.

I think there is a spiritual level in humans which would probably have a more common perception or wider agreement about "goodness" but that doesn't make it any the less an opinion -- just a more widely held one.

(Actually I'm not sure that last sentence makes any sense, but I'm leaving it in anyway because it says what I meant!)
