I don't remember the stories being softened in my grandma's book, which, btw, she gave me when I was 8 yrs old. I bought old 1905 copies of it for my neices and sister this year, for Christmas. Billy Beg and His Bull, The Cat and the Parrot, both of those I remember being rather deliciously horrifying. Bryant listed the stories by age group, but not in any formal way, really. My favourite and that of my children was Raggylug. Then, there were Why the Sea is Salt, Why Morning Glories Climb, The Story of Wylie, Why the Evergreens Keep their Leaves in Winter; wonderful stories all.
