I'd always played Gibsons and Epiphones in my early days, probably because Martins were too expensive for me. I have a well beaten 1957 Gibson LG-3 whose top is held together by a "bridge doctor," and a gorgeous old Super 400. These older Gibsons seemed right to me - they felt not like a Stradavarius nor a piece of furniture, but just responsive and versatile guitars. Haven't tried any newer ones, though.
