There is a recording from the 20s by Jim Jackson with a resonator guitar. It is called "Old Dog Blue" and it appears in the Anthology of American Folk Music Vol II.

I will probably make a lot of enemies, but I don't like dogs, and I can sort-of smell Ol' blue whenever I hear this song. But the picking of Jackson makes up for a lot.
