It is a conundrum to see you begin a sentence about opening a can of worms and ending with "peace".

I am a smoker, and a former heavy drinker. I do not consider myself superior to anyone. However, it appears that since alcoholism can and does cause so much tragedy in multi-faceted forms, people tend to look down upon the drinkers.

I have never smoked a cigarette and become abusive to anyone. I have done so while drinking.

Drinking is linked to so many types of sadness, whereas, smoking is linked to the illness/ death of the smoker and the problems caused by the illness/ death.
