When I moved to Maine in 1972 I heard the story about the woman philanthropist who died in Kittery at the age of ninety-something. The newspaper obituary lauded her philanthropies, etc. but bemoaned the fact that, though she had been born in [York or Kittery], Maine, she wasn't a native. She had been CONCEIVED in Massachusetts.I lived in Maine for the next 8 years (been residing in New Hampster ever since) and learned that it takes, I think, three generations before you're considered a native.
Damn. My ancestry is landed in Wisconsin.
