From: GUEST,Richard Sutton I read my daily NY Times today, and on page 25 an article announcing the passing of Dave VanRonk, the "Mayor" of Greenwich Village. He died of colon cancer yesterday, the 10th. I thought back to the times I was learning a few "raw" old songs to beat out on my cheap "Aria". I was only 16, and VanRonk was a Folk Hero. It was 1968, the war was in full swing and resistance to it's insidious influence was considered "a duty" by my circle of friends and musicians. The rusty old songs learned from Dave's records were always good for a few laughs, to get people thinking, or as a way to rally folks together. His version of Cocaine Blues got daily "play" in the soundtrack of our lives at this point. Those songs, and his bigger than life, growling style influenced several generations of musicians, performers and songwriters. Dave lived the way he sang. We won't be seeing his kind again real soon.
