Ah! Observatories as excuse to visit interesting places! Arizona and New Mexico and Texas have some nice ones. And Dr. Mark on the Big Island might be able to tell you where the observatories are in Hawaii. Somewhere well removed from the volcanic parks, I would imagine. . . I heard a fascinating piece on National Public Radio (might have been one of the radio geographic series) about how workers get light-headed working there, from the very high elevation.
