A luthier friend of mine has seen a series of photgraphs of the reconstruction process of the Monroe mandolin. He speaks of the process with the hushed tomes reserved for awe of greatness. His descripption is beyond my poor ability to reproduce but you should find a luthier who has seen the series and listen to him/her talk about how Charlie Derrington did the job.
