Most of Kipling's poems will sing ok - he wrote them that way, often with a specific tune in mind. For some reason, when "composers" have got to work on a K poem, they've tended to chop the words about to suit their tunes: take "Mandalay" or "Boots", for example - quite unnecessary!
'Course, anyone who hangs around pubs chatting up soldiers today would probably be arrested!
