Tinker toys, no kidding, would probably make the best squares for the above system. Get 8 long straight pieces, tie 2 by 2 slightly offset, and you can use the round piece to make the corners if not both long pieces (per side) are expected to enter it (the round piece in each corner) but only the one sticking out a little further.
