in my former department a lot of Uyghur studies were done, but since the head Uygurist left the studies were abandoned.

The mail Leporis Regis is not encouraging; I can't say anything about the truth since I haven't been there. Nevertheless I would grab at the chance to live in an interesting foreign culture - but I'm an orientalist and islamologist and could some religious studies besides.
