but virtually every one of the old time REAL shantymen sung their own version, and sometimes a different one each time, with verses added or subtracted at whim. Also singing the words of one shanty to the tune of another, either by intention or accidentally, and swopping halyard shanties for capstan, pumps, stamp & go, etc. which makes a nonsense of collectors valiant efforts to get down a difinitive version for anything sung at sea.Perhaps the collectors should have admitted that the genre was fluid, elastic and highly mutable - rather then trying to pin down "definitive versions".
