There was a branch of the service called Special Services when I was in the Army. I think those assigned to SS were primarily administrators though, working primarily with USO groups who came from the entertainment world to entertain the troops. They also were responsible for providing programs at Service Clubs on the bases.

I was Special Services NCO for my Artillery Battery, but the SS responsibilities consisted, primarily, of holding current event orientations for the Battery each week.

Since we are talking Civil War here, Rick, I'm not sure Blue Grass was around yet. :>)
