I've just been chatting to a friend who might be travelling with me. He is very interested in travelling by train from Chicago through the Rockies to San Francisco. It does sound appealing (a tad pricey, but appealing) - has anyone ever done that journey or know much about it? (I've already visited the Amtrak site and got info from there.)

I'm trying to avoid driving if I can as I hate driving. But I suppose it's not much of a road trip if I'm not prepared to get behind the wheel!
