Also in Kentucky, at Clay City on the Red River, there is a huge bluegrass festival on May 7-8. This group has some type of event weekly, but the one on this date is one of their two BIG festivals.

After reading his message again I realize they may not be interested in Blue Grass, although it is truly American. But if they are interested in roots and folklore, I'd really recommend they stop at Berea.

Sorry Sandy if I push the place, but you can get a real flavor for the region there and the Traditional Music Fest is excellent.
