Sorry about your Dad Mrrzy but I dont think this was a first.

For instance. House of Commons, March 1979 Airey Neave MP, the then shadow Northern Ireland Secretary and a close friend of Tory leader Margaret Thatcher, was killed by an Irish National Liberation Army car bomb in the Commons' car park.

Not quite an embassy I know but the house of commons is a pretty major target. If I felt like digging a little deeper I am sure I could find a non-US embassy or two that had been attacked prior to that date but it would be too depressing.

Remember that the Middle East and Europe have had to put up with this type of terrorism for longer than you have in the USA.

It never gets any easier I'm afraid. Try to make sure that NO terrorists get any support and we may eventualy see the end of it. But I won't hold my breath:-(
