Another Quake is due on the New Madrid fault within the next sixty years or so.
But knowing that doesn't help.
What does help is earthquake damage mitigation.
So here are a few tips, if you live in an area of risk.
1. Tie a steel strap around your water heater and screw it into the walls so that your water heater won't fall over. A lot of damage is caused by flooding when the water heater falls and breaks the water lines. 2. Install an automatic shut off valve on any gas lines that run into your house. 3. If your house has a decorative facing brick wall, tie, then it into the framing with steel ties. 4. If you do any serious redecorating, consider replacing the sheet rock on the inside the corners of your house with plywood. 5. Secure bookshelves and refrigerators to the wall with steel brackets. 6. If there is an earthquake, hide inside in a strong corner of the house. Don't rush out of the door. Many deaths occur from people going outside and being hit by masonry falling from the house.
