I think the answer is that it depends on the film and the kids, which is a non-answer. Some films portray certain kids at certain time periods in certain situations very well. For example, I knew every character in "American Graffitti" even though my time was a bit later and not in southern California. "Stand By Me" was perfect for late 50's kids....just perfect.
