Dead Horse:
Let's see how bad I can mess this up.
You wrote:
<a href="http://www.mudcat.org">thread.cfm?threadid=40461</a>
and then:
<a href="http://www.mudcat.org">thread.cfm?threadid=4078035</a>
Either of the above will take you to the mudcat homepage - not to the particular thread.
The "thread.cfm?threadid=#####" is part of the address that the tag "points to," so the whole thing needs to go in the opening tag - between the first "<a href=" and the first ">":
<a href="http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=4078035>
The stuff that comes after the first > is the "display" to give people a place to click. It is a fine idea to repeat the critical part of the address, so you might use:
<a href="http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=4078035">thread.cfm?threadid=4078035</a>
Or you can put anything else (preferably descriptive) there:
<a href="http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=4078035">Answers to the world, its meaning, and eventual value to humanity</a>
Which would display as
Answers to the world, its meaning, and eventual value to humanity
It the "target" is on mudcat, you can shorten it to:
<a href=/thread.cfm?threadid=4078035">thread.cfm?threadid=4078035</a>
Since anyone who can click it is already connected to one of the mudcat servers, you only have to tell them where on their server to find it.
If the target is "offsite,' you need the whole thing.
