Peter, FDR was physically incapable of combat. Whatever moral authority he had, came from somewhere else.
For my own part, I would far rather have a Commander in Chief with combat experience. I feel that he/she would be less likely to engage in foreign adventurism for purely political purposes, having experienced, first-hand, the rigors and devastation of warfare.
