Didn't Bascom Lamar Lunsford and other North Carolinans play a three-finger arpeggio style? It was very gentle, but had a slight syncopation. I've heard Peggy Seeger use a similar three-finger argeggio to accompany her ballad singing, which is what Lunsord did.
