Tony, sorry can't help technically with the music bit but in all the versions I've heard traditional jazz bands perform the bit starting "There are blues you get from women..." is usually sung fast & staccato with the instrumentalists playing percussive stop chords (?is that the correct term?) behind. Usually finishes off with a flashy solo by tenor banjo player.
