There is nothing more powerful for Old Time guitar than playing scales. Practice your G scale and C scale. Slowly until they are perfectly clean backwards and forwards. Only then slowly increase speed. Don't try to watch your fingers after you know the scale. You needn't close your eyes, just look out a point of reference.
