It seems that the best translations are those which operate at a broader level - ie translating the essence rather than the exact words. But..... I think that we all tend to pick up different nuances and flavours from a song, and so any such translation is neccessarily filtered. Maybe that's why some translations are irksome - because the beautiful thing that you see in the original has been filtered out.
