"The Penguin Book of Canadian Folk Songs" (Comp. by Edith Fowkes) has all the notes you might need - including dates of collection - in the back. Of course, in that period, there were a lot of political comment songs going around (i.e. "I'll be a Tory, in Upper Canada") back in the good old days when politics were a blood sport.
