Another discussion forum that I used to hang out on would always ask guests to click on some of the ads - apparently the advertisers can keep track of how many hits they're getting from which site, and make decisions about where to buy advertising that way. So we guests could support the site by clicking the ads, so the ad money would keep coming in.
