I think you misunderstand what a 'hit' means. It doesn't mean 'visitor' or 'page view'

This page (and most others) have two graphics and some text. That makes 3 hits - the server being asked for 3 files.

Think about how many pages you look at in a day and the figure isn't hard to understand. (Everytime you 'refresh' the index page, that's another 3 hits)
