There are now many grades of quality in "duct tape." Many years ago, in the Navy, I personally saw duct tape used to make a successful temp repair of 100lb pressure steam line. Never w/out it since; But be careful to get a good grade of the stuff. I once used it to patch a LARGE tear in the top radiator hose in my old Land Cruiser; It held, & lost very little water, in Texas summer heat until the week-end, when I had time to get to the parts house & get a replacement. (Finals week in college.)

No shade-tree mechanic (or household) should be w/out it. I have initiated my wife to the wondrous capabilities of this stuff as well. We use it for lots of stuff.
