Remember, we also have a vast cable television network whereby people can watch sports in the comfort of their homes, rather than going to the event in person, and you can bet a LOT of people are doing just that. Heck, how many ESPNs are there now? Three?

Not to mention the fact that the World Cup overlapped the Stanley Cup. And the NBA playoffs.
