A friend of mine once remarked that losing a species was like walking down the basement steps in the dark and a step is missing. It captures that sick sensation better than anything I know.

The Vietnamese example also reminds me of the hill tribes -- all these unique cultures and ecosystems clinging to remote high hills and the top edges of things as the flood of the rest of humanity rises around them.
