more thread drift... in the days when postal mail was the norm, I often put doodles (smilies, arrows, spirals, paw prints, hearts, etc.) after sentances and in the margins, so for me, emoticons are just a continuation of that...

Also, in letters, you have more of a human touch in that you have the person's handwriting, which is almost like tone of voice...
