Jeanie: I think the squiggly wave symbol you refer to is probably a tilde as in Spanish words like 'mañana' and 'niño' where it appears over the second and first 'n' respectively, having the effect of sounding the 'n' as an 'ny' (with the 'y' as a consonant). It is on most keyboards, on the third key to the right of the 'l'
