Subject: John Frankenheimer - RIP
One of Hollywood's great directors has died. John Frankenheimer who was 72 died of a stroke on July 6th. He had some of his greatest successes in the 1960s with such marvellous movies as "Birdman of Alcatraz" and "The Manchurian Candidate" (both in 1962);"Seven Days in May" (1964) and "The Gypsy Moths" (1969). A close friend of Robert Kennedy, he had driven him to the hotel where the senator was murdered. His career went into a sharp decline after the killing and he suffered from depression and although he continued to direct, the output was poor. His career saw an upturn in the 1990s whe he directed "Against the Wall" (1994) and "Ronin" with Robert de Niro (1998). He is survived by his wife, two daughters and a grandson.
