Thread Name: Origin: Long Black Veil
Subject: Lyr Add: THE LONG BLACK VEIL (Jagger/Chieftains)
Mick Jagger and the Chieftains recorded a fine version of the "Long Black Veil." It is closer to the original lyrics than the one in the DT.

THE LONG BLACK VEIL

Ten years ago, on a dark cold night
Someone was killed 'neath the town hall light.
There were a few at the scene, and they all did agree,
That the man who ran looked a lot like me.

The judge said, "Son, what is your alibi?
If you were somewhere else, you won't have to die."
I spoke not a word, though it meant my life,
For I had been in the arms of my best friend's wife.

She walks these hills in a long black veil
She visits my grave when the night winds wail.
Nobody knows. Nobody sees.
Nobody knows but me.

The scaffold is high and eternity's near
She stood in the crowd and shed not a tear.
Sometimes at night when the dark wind moans,
In a long black veil, she cries over my bones.

She walks these hills in a long black veil.
She visits my grave when the night winds wail.
Nobody knows. Nobody sees.
Nobody knows but me.
