I wonder why she was told that? Was that standard advice for unknown songwriters? Was it because she was a woman? Seems to me I've heard similar stories regarding other songs. Could it be that there was some "received wisdom" along those lines among the songwriting community? Inquiring minds (and songwriters) want to know...
