Australians call their mates "Blue" or "Bluey" only if they have red hair. Sort of an in-joke really. Probably not funny, I suppose, but it's sort of an indication of the contrary nature of Oz humour. If you're born with red hair then the first nickname you get is "Blue" and it sticks throughout your whole life. "Carrot-top" is less common because it's not as funny.
